Many digital image processing algorithms and applications are dedicated to image correction. While a vast majority of problems are covered by many scientific publications, there are still some unaddressed, like those related to flash backscattering. This paper presents a method for interactively detecting the boundaries of digital image artifacts that appear in images acquired by digital cameras due to the flash light reflection on airborne particles that are placed out of focus. The correction of detected artifacts is addressed in a companion paper [1].
