In northwest of China, large-scale renewable energy sources, such as wind power (WP) and photovoltaic (PV), with uncertainties and intermittent characteristics, are transmitted through ultra-high voltage direct current (UHV DC) transmission lines and are bundled with conventional power supplies. Reducing curtailment and improving the consumption of large-scale wind power is one of the main tasks of grid companies. In this paper, a field test plan of arranging hydropower units to compensate the wind power across wild region was designed, while the QiShao high-voltage DC is used as a typical application scenario under the assumption that UHV DC operating in the “wind-and-photovoltaic mode. A field test of WP-hydropower joint operation involving multiple hydropower units was carried out. Results show that (1) the hydropower units can compensate the total wind power fluctuations from the WP sending grid on the one minute-scale; (2) the WP-hydropower joint operation can track the combined power generation adjustment target.
