An improved exponential reaching law based on sliding mode control (SMC) algorithm is proposed to build the new speed controller of the fractional slot concentrated winding permanent magnet (FSCW PM) machine for electric vehicle application control system. The D&Q inductances of the machine are obtained by finite element analysis. The output responses of SMC controller are analyzed and compared with conventional PI control. Simulation and experimental results show that the new controller can solve the problem of large fluctuation and approach to steady state smoothly.
