An electronic backrest monitoring the sitting posture is designed in this study. The backrest comprises an STC89C52 SCM, an infrared ranging sensor module, and an image acquisition and monitoring module. The distance between the selected reference point and the backrest is measured with the infrared ranging sensor module. The sitting posture is monitored in real time according to the distance of the initial healthy sitting posture. The image acquisition system supports monitoring of the sitting posture to guarantee that the distance between the reference point and the backrest is measured accurately and false alarms are avoided when there is no presence of people. The human sitting posture is actively monitored by the electronic backrest, enabling people to effectively avoid various diseases incurred by unhealthy sitting posture.
