Conflicting behavior attacks have an adverse impact upon the trust management framework of a mobile ad hoc network as they intend to corrupt the trust computation. The current work aims for a security solution to counter the conflicting behavior attack launched by on-off packet droppers which is also termed as a user domain on-off attack pattern. A user domain on-off attack involves conflicting behavior of a node in the sense that it exhibits non-malicious behavior with some nodes and malicious behavior with other nodes. The attacker successfully creates a situation where an honest recommender is treated as dishonest by another non-malicious node. Such attacks create an ambiguous situation wherein, the possibilities of a dishonest recommender attack as well as the conflicting behavior attack exist. The current work proposes a security solution in the form of a trust update scheme which gives due weight to both possibilities so as to gradually nullify the effect of dishonest recommenders as well as conflicting behavior attackers.
