A new sensorless speed control algorithm for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors is presented. State observer is designed for speed and position estimation, and its stability is proved using the second Lyapunov method. If vector control algorithm is used for speed control, observer can be slightly modified to achieve the controller performance that is suitable for high dynamic applications. The effectiveness of designed sensorless speed control algorithm is demonstrated by simulations.
