Network lifetime and coverage are viewed as the dominating considerations in designing the structure layout for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). In a WSN, the sensor nodes and its central node are located far apart to ensure good coverage over the concerning area. However, communication over long distance between the nodes consumes excessive energy from the battery powered sensors and reduces the lifetime of a WSN. In this paper, we propose an efficient crossover EA-based method to solve the optimization problem mentioned afore. Experiment result shows that the crossover EA-based algorithm can find a better solution than the traditional EA algorithm. This approach is also applicable to various other complex optimization problems.
