Large-scale renewable energies access to power system has become a major trend. The multi-terminal voltage source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC-MTDC) system is an important solution to the access. A coordinated operation and control strategy is proposed for the VSC-MTDC integration with renewable energy by using the adjustment capacity of the VSC-MTDC and the pumped storage system. After analyzing the characteristics of each subsystem, the actual needs of each subsystem are proposed. Then the coordinated operation strategy of the entire system is proposed. This strategy can solve the peak load regulation problem caused by the injection of renewable energy in the long time scale, and absorb the random fluctuation of the system in the short time scale. A Zhangbei four-terminal VSC-MTDC system is built in PSCAD/EMTDC software and the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified.
