The optimization design of a LCL filter associated with the arm inductor of a LV modular multilevel converter used as an interlink converter in a hybrid ac/dc microgrid is presented. The optimization algorithm implemented relies on the Genetic Algorithm where the fitness function is constructed to account for different design constraints and requirements of the topology and the filter. The inductive components of the whole system are selected simultaneously, capturing hence the interaction between them in the design stage itself. It is shown that the arm inductor can contribute to attenuating the ac switching current ripple leading to smaller LCL filter volume and hence reducing the overall footprint of the converter.
