A new method for generating various kinds of contours of piston rings using a cam is applied to a numerically controlled system for precision turning of non-round piston rings. In order to achieve a satisfactory control performance and to ensure the desired contours, a built-in noise diagnosis and suppression policy and a fuzzy control scheme are studied, and a series of experiments are performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. It was proved that the proposed method can guarantee good control performance and robustness of the system and thus high quality of the products even the knowledge of the turning process and the actual dynamic model of the system is vague, imprecise and fragmentary.
