Magnetron sputtering has been used to deposit thin films of Y 2 O 3 : Eu, which achieve a cathodoluminescent efficiency of 2 lm/W when activated, while retaining a high-resolution capability of ∼250 line pairs/mm and good optical transparency. A wide-band antireflection/high-absorption coating using silicon-oxygen material of varying composition has also been developed for use with these phosphor screens for contrast enhancement. A comparison of the performances of these thin-film screens with conventional settled screens is given.
