The aim of this paper is to present modified genetic algorithms (GA) that are used in the design of a hybrid renewable energy system (HRES). Another aim is the presentation of the direct design control (DDC) concept for the HRES control. The main goal of this paper is to develop an efficient tool for the selection of the components of the energy system, with 2 major selection criteria (price and number), using modified GA. The modified GA for the selection module are used in order to decrease the computation time and generate the optimal solutions. This paper will present the modifications that have been made of to the GA in order to improve the quality of the generated solutions. The second goal of the paper is to present the DDC concept that allows the planning system to automatically generate the control and supervisory program for the designed HRES, thus, reducing the implementation time. The DDC concept will be introduced for the automatically generated control code, and the authors present a solution that uses data servers and command files that will provide the link between the design software and the control platform.
