This paper proposes a fast beam switching operation for a multi-electrode quasi-stadium laser diode using mode competition between the axial and diamond-shaped resonator modes. Numerical calculations based on rate equations revealed that a switching time of a few nanoseconds can be realized by optimizing the device structure and operating conditions. The effect of gain saturation on the beam switching characteristics were also investigated. Gain saturation was found to suppress relaxation oscillations associated with beam switching without significantly affecting the switching time.
