The traditional broadband impedance spectroscopy method has poor performance in identifying local weak defects. This article proposes a new method for identifying cable weak defect types using impedance polar coordinate images that combine impedance amplitude and phase. The paper first elaborates the principle of this method, and then establishes a relevant cable defect model. On this basis, the disadvantage of traditional input impedance spectrum is explained. The effectiveness of using impedance polar plots to identify local weak defect types is further analyzed. The simulation results show that the proposed impedance polar image has higher sensitivity in identifying cable local weak defects.
