The definitions of the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) in different literature and corresponding optimization method are given first after analyzing the background of the emergence of VPP. Then, a low voltage distribution network is used to simulate the connection between the VPP and the electricity market. The economic dispatch management of VPP and power market is modeled as an optimization problem. The objective of the problem in this paper is to minimize the total operating cost of VPP in a 24 h time interval. Enhanced Firefly Algorithm (EFA) is proposed to determine optimal energy management of a VPP with RESs, Battery Energy Storage (BSS) and load control in a case study. Combining the development of new energy and electric power market, the performance of the algorithm is verified in three near-real-world scenarios.
