Design of a permanent magnet transverse flux machine optimized for high torque density and high power factor is presented. The optimization process focuses on performance enhancement through improvement of power factor without sacrificing torque density. Simple magnetostatic simulation based method is proposed for the optimization process. Magnetic couplings among axially separated phases are also discussed in the article. Experimental results demonstrating the correlation of measured inductances with that of simulation results are provided.
