The paper presents a fully configurable instrument that can be programmed as a digital signal acquisition and processing unit or as a generator of arbitrarily structured data patterns. The processor has been designed, prototyped and tested in the digital spectroscopy field. Versatility, evolution prospects and easiness of customization of the system are guaranteed by a configurable core device (FPGA) that acts as processing and interfacing programmable unit.
