The Chinese Ministry of Education is planning the nationwide implementation of a standardized curriculum for all second foreign languages at Chinese schools by the end of 2017 which creates an unique potential for the German language. To illustrate the opportunities the introduction of German at schools may offer, this article focuses on programs of the Goethe-Institut China supporting the expansion of German as a foreign language at Chinese schools since 2008. In particular, projects and activities implemented in close cooperation and partnership with national educational institutions within the Chinese education system are introduced. Against the backdrop of a rising demand, the article examines how previous and new programs help guarantee a sustainable growth of German as a foreign language in China. The goal is to show how essential cooperation and dialogue with local partners are for a continuous and stable development of German as a foreign language. Moreover, the author emphasizes the important role these programs play in promoting the German language and argues that they should not just be understood as a reaction to rising demand but rather as an active force increasing demand.
