ABSTRACT Master Thesis BERNSTEIN AND JACKSON THEOREMS ON THE BEST POLYNOMIAL APPROXIMATION Sevilay KIRCI Ankara University Graduate School Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Matematics Danışman: Doç. Dr. Ertan ÎBIKLÎ This thesis consists of four chapters. In the first chapter is devoted to the introduction, the preliminaris and uni form convergence of continuous functions by means of algebraic polynomials and trigonometric polynomials. In the second chapter, first, definition of the algebraic polynomial of the best approximation, trigonometric polynomials of the brat approximation and mod ulus of continuity are given and then Jackson theorems which are the funda mental theorems of the approximation theory and their corollaries are given. In the third chapter, inequalities of Bernstein, differential properties of func tions and Bernstein theorems are given. In the final chapter, the best approximation of function by means of linear positive polynomial operators are given. 2003, 71 pages KEY WORDS: Weierstrass approximation theorems, the best approxima tion, modulus of continutiy, Lipschitz class, Jackson the orems, Bernstein polynomial, Bersntein inequalities, Berns tein theorems and Zygmund class. 71
