The aim of this article is to identify the relevant skills and their relative importance that logistics professionals in China required and to investigate areas for further improvement. Using a survey questionnaire, data were collected against forty-two skill items. The respondents were chosen from among the managers working in national and multinational organizations in China. Using expert opinions these skill items were grouped to create two higher-level logistics skill categories: a hard skill category and a soft skill category. Then, an importance-expertise matrix (IEM) analysis was conducted on these higher-level skill categories to assess the strengths and weaknesses of these skills. The analysis revealed that in order to prepare logistics professionals to face future challenges, they need to further develop their expertise in skills such as demand forecasting and inventory management, warehousing and distribution, conflict management, communication, and language skills.
