Was the rise of the country house in the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic above all a 'bourgeois' phenomenon, as Johan Huizinga argued in his famous long essay on Dutch civilisation in the seventeenth century. The article shows that not only the merchants and regents of the city of Amsterdam but also the aristocratic circles around the court of the of House Orange-Nassau in The Hague contributed strongly to the growing popularity of a rich country life, including gardening and garden poetry, in the Dutch Republic.
