The COVID-19 pandemic has had a rapid and serious impact on the globally integrated automotive industry. Symptoms include a halt to exports of Chinese parts, major production disruptions across Europe and the closure of assembly plants in the United States. This puts intense pressure on an industry that is already facing declining global demand and is likely to lead to increased merger and acquisition activity. The aim of this paper is to analyze and compare the impact of the pandemic on three automotive industries from three different continents, Europe, Asia and North America, and analyze the implications of the pandemic on each and explore mechanisms for recovery from pandemic strikes.
