Preliminary results of a study from the Bridging Educational Grants in Nursing (BEGIN) program from the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario has identified that PSWs and RPNs report not feeling valued by employers while working in long-term care. Therefore, in the current study, we plan to investigate what would make Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) feel valued while working in LTC, and what being valued means to them. Further, we aim to determine what strategies employers of PSWs and RPNs use in LTC to provide value to these staff. We aim to recruit PSWs, RPNs and employers working in LTC from LTC homes in Ontario for semi-structured interviews to explore these concepts. Interviews will be audio-recorded and transcribed for analysis to find common themes among the participants reports. To build capacity in the workforce within LTC, recruit and retain PSWs and nurses of all categories in LTC, we need to understand what contributes to a sense of bring valued for PSWs and RPNs.
