Millicoulometric determination of n-values in the polarographic reduction of cadmium and iodate ions

Apparatus and procedural criteria are described which make millicoulometry an accurate and reliable technique. A micro-cell is described which permits the complete, exclusion of oxygen and causes half the initial moles of electroactive species in a 100-λ volume to be electrolyzed in 30–60 min. By recording the output of the chopper-stabilized operational amplifier coulometer during electrolysis, determinate errors due to electronic failure of the coulometer and to non-depletable faradaic sources are detected. It is shown that the uncertainty in the apparent fractional reduction is a function of the fractional reduction. Optimum experimental results are realized with fractional reduction of 40–60%; time required: 30–60 min; precision obtained: ±5–3%.
