This paper presents the benefits of using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) to build reduced representations of static grids to be used for market and planning studies. A simple grid reduction based on POD is shown to yield more accurate results than traditional network equivalents due to a combination of zonal dimensional reductions and a proper criteria for the allocation of a prescribed degree of freedom among potential variables.
