Simpler, faster access to networked information resources is in high demand in today's academic libraries by both librarians and endusers. Generic X Windows technolongy which allows multiple sessions on a workstation, is one answer to this need. Binghamtcm University Libraries Systems staff and public services librkans have develobd Internet 1, an X Windows -based interface that uses onscreen menus, interactive help, and remote session scripting to provide seamless access to the vast multitude of Internet sources (including client-server applications such as Xgopher). This system runs on SUN workstations with NCD X terminals for user access. This article discusses how librarians have adjusted to this change in their technological environmental, how they have been trained in its use, and how Internet 1 has changed the nature of Bingharnton University Libraries' reference service.
