This article presents information related to optical character recognition. Character recognition is the process by which bitmaps within desired fields of a document are converted into character codes. Character recognition based on scanned images is also known as optical character recognition (OCR). In modern approaches to character recognition, optical processing is no longer used except for scanning documents, and recognition is typically implemented by software running on digital computers or specialized chips.
