The article features the Ekling temple complex and the image of Eklingji in Udaipur, India. The complex has suffered the vicissitudes of invasion several times and many of its temple and monuments were later rebuilt. Even the image of Eklingji is not original; the icon has been replaced more than once over the centuries. Since entry into the temple's sanctum is forbidden, a close examination of the sculpture in worship is impossible. However, the early 20th century photograph provides a rare close-up view of the icon from the west. The black stone sculpture is approximately three feet in height and its shaft appears somewhat truncated, suggesting that a considerable portion of its length may be embedded in the large, square pitha.
