Since 1970 the lignite deposits in Megalopolis (Peloponnesus) have been exploited on a large scale and are used for generating electricity. The molluscs which occur in these deposits have been studied for the first time. All 33 species are still existent and confirm the Pleistocene age of the sediments. Almost all of them are freshwater or amphibious animals which prefer heavily overgrown waters, but there are also potamic elements. Today many species have spread southwards only into the northern parts of Greece, pointing to a colder climate at the time the deposits were formed.
