Graphical abstract: An eggshell-derived catalyst prepared by facile calcination and treatment with glycerol shows enhanced basicity and hydrophobicity, which is highly selective for hydrogenation of various bio-based aromatic aldehydes to relevant aromatic alcohols (> 90% yields) at room temperature.
