ABSTRACTIn mountainous regions, snow can generate major hazards for civil structures. PRANE project sponsored by French Civil-engineering and Research Ministries gathers several laboratories in the field of structures subjected to snow effects. Two main domains are studied: the first one concerns rigid passive protection structures directly subjected to snow avalanches in run-out zones. The second one deals with flexible snow-supporting structures used as active protection systems in avalanche starting zones. This paper recalls the main objectives of the PRANE project and gives as example, elements about the analysis of the destruction of two deflective walls in Taconnaz during winter 1999.
