•Our results for elastic stiffness verify the Born's mechanical stability criteria for cubic structures.•The SrPt2compound is found to be stiffer than SrPd2compound.•The Poisson's ratio value makes sure that SrPd2and SrPt2in a ductile manner and has ionic bond.•Both compounds possess metallic characteristics.
