The article comments on the papers about the importance of supply chain management published in the December 1, 2002 issue of the journal "International Journal of Logistics Management." There is now a growing recognition across industry that supply chain management is an increasingly important determinant of marketplace success or even of business survival. A further development in managerial thinking and practice is the move towards process thinking. This is one of the most fundamental transformations of the last decade; in other words the realization that the organization should be structured around the processes by which value is delivered in the final marketplace. Concurrently, there is also emerging a view that supply chains are really networks and that network management brings with it a whole new set of challenges. Logistics has also become increasingly important over the past 13 years. Whereas once the concern was mainly cost focused--in the sense that cost reduction was the priority as far as logistics was concerned, there is a sharper focus on the strategic dimension.
