The article focuses on the development of an initiative designed to enhance the role of the emergency department in the identification and management of childhood asthma in the U.S. An estimated 9 million children in the U.S. have had asthma diagnosed at some time in their lives. Asthma represents 17 percent of all pediatric emergency department (ED) visits. In 1999 the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) launched its pediatric asthma initiative consisting of five separate but related components. Pursuant to RWJF procedure, an invitation for proposal was sent to potential applicants. Assisted by the National Program Office and RWJF senior staff, the National Advisory Committee assessed applicants in 5 areas. In light of preliminary project findings, it was concluded that continued research will be essential to evaluate educational strategies in ED settings.
