The article reports on ancestral plant whole-genome duplications (WGDs) predating the origin of flowering and seed plants. It is said that WGDs or polyploidy events have been studied extensively in plants. All eudicots share an ancient WGD event and most monocots share one ancient WGD event. It highlights ancient genome duplications in plants that occurred before the divergence of monocots and eudicots.
