The article presents a discussion regarding the global factors that have led to the increased emergence of zoonotic diseases. Emerging diseases caused by viruses including bovine spongiform encephalopathy and avian influenza is estimated to have cost the world's economies over 80 billion U.S. dollar. Factors promoting increased numbers of epidemics includes the extensive global trading and tourism pattern and the exposure to new pathogens through ecosystem disruption.
