Burkitt lymphoma is a very aggressive childhood cancer. C-Myc translocation is the hallmark of all forms of Burkitt lymphoma. Three distinct types of Burkitt lymphoma are morphologically identical but have a distinct geographical distribution and clinical course. Endemic Burkitt lymphoma affects children from equatorial Africa and accounts for most cases of childhood cancers from this region. Epstein-Barr virus and malaria seem to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of endemic form and have been the focus of research worldwide. The tumor is extremely sensitive to chemotherapy.
