This article, published in the Arab Journal of Interventional Radiology, explores the use of transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block as an alternative to conscious sedation for pain management during percutaneous gastrostomy tube insertions. The study conducted a retrospective observational cohort review of patients who underwent the procedure and compared the outcomes of those who received conscious sedation versus TAP block. The results showed that patients who received TAP block had significantly lower postprocedural pain scores, maximum pain scores, and opiate use in the first 24 hours compared to those who received sedation. The study concludes that TAP block can be a suitable alternative to sedation, especially for high-risk patients, as it provides better pain control with a lower risk of respiratory depression.
