The article presents a randomized controlled trial which examines the effectiveness of ginkgo biloba for the prevention of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The participants were community volunteers 75 years and older with mild cognitive impairment or normal cognition. A 240 mg dose of G biloba with the formulation EGb 761 was used for the trial. The diagnosis of dementia by the mental health diagnosis system DSM-IV criteria was the primary efficacy end point. A statistical analysis of the data and a discussion about safety monitoring is included. Researchers concluded that G biloba at 12 mg twice a day was not effective in reducing the incidence rate of Alzheimer's Disease or dementia.
