Highlights: [•] We report marked inter-individual differences in the breathing pattern when the ventilatory threshold (V Th) was reached during incremental cycling exercise. [•] The subjects who had a tachypnoeic response during cycling had also an accentuated inspiratory off-switch by the pulmonary vagal afferents and the highest changes in breathing frequency during a static handgrip. [•] These responses were minimal or absent in subjects who only increased the tidal volume during cycling. [•] Thus, the subjects who present a tachypnoeic response to cycling seem to have higher sensitivities to pulmonary inflation and also present a tachypnoeic response to handgrip exercise.
