Outcomes 1. Identify use of narrative medicine to achieve specific hospice and palliative medicine fellowship milestones 2. Name the benefits of including narrative medicine in their didactic series 3. Use narrative medicine to teach core concepts and milestones The core skills involved in palliative care include assessment, prevention, and early identification of symptoms associated with physical, psychological, and spiritual distress (PPSD). Proficiency in PPSD palliative care skills is a crucial component of the milestones that palliative fellows must achieve to complete their residencies. "Write, Read and Reflect Narrative Medicine" is an evidence-based model that may be used as an experiential education modality to teach such milestones. Another important component of the hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) fellowship is to educate fellows to work with interdisciplinary teams. To incorporate this element into the HPM fellowship curriculum, a mixed method pilot study program was implemented at St. Luke's University Health Network. The pilot study was composed of psychiatry, palliative, and pastoral programs. All three programs include similar core skills, which facilitated the abilities of participants to reflect on their experiences with medicine and patient encounters. Data collected from the learners included a "pre-survey," which measured the participants' experiences with their first narrative sessions, and a "post-survey," which captured changes after 6 months of engaging in narrative sessions. In addition, the narratives were collected and analyzed to determine changes in participants' perspectives throughout the program. Overall, 93% of the participants reported, upon completion of the three programs, that they learned how to listen without judgement. Moreover, the participants indicated that they would refer more patients to other interdisciplinary team members in the future. Besides improving learners' ability to work in synchrony with other specialties and integrating milestones in their practice, learners also reported personal gains from participating in narrative sessions. Personal gains were reported as an opportunity to share vulnerable experiences and connect with humanity. In this presentation, the authors will share how to implement this approach in their training programs by reporting on findings and engaging the audience in a narrative session. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
