In this thesis, the writer gathers and judges in the first place the philosophical conception and development of death for the Pure Land as an operation for revealing the Buddhist philosophy presented in the two cantoes(or parts) of the Shilla dynasty songs created by and oath for the blessed death, while looking deep into the "Songs of Wishing for the Death"(원왕생가) as well as into the poetry, poets and their philosophies of "Songs of Celebrating the dead younger sister" (제망매가) and examining the value of their literary works. In the Shilla dynasty, the accomodation of Amitabha belief and faith were promoted by such great priests as Won-hyo, Hyei-sook, Hyei-kong and Dai-ahn, along with such stream of the times as social impermanence of worldly things due to war as well as with the pessimistic philosophy on the part of some resticated people among the royal family in Seoul, the capital of the kingdom at the time. In the early reception days of Amitabha philosophy for the Pure Land, and ascetic life for learning an end-less life (or an eternal life) predominated, but the poetry of wishing for the blessed death was also born in compliance with the generalization of the method of 16 viewpoints soon after the time of Kyong-heung. The narrative of this song of wishing for death was created for the purpose of showing and directing the belief that the death for the Pure land could be attained simply through devotion to leading the life of sexual abstinence by close application as well as through salvation from without based on the devotion. In view of the way of a series of recording in a book at "The last testament of three kingdoms" (Samguk Yusa) as well as the creation of subject word for the work itself, possibility is great all the for Omjang to be the author. Dhilosophy of Buddhism on the part of Wol-myung-sa who composed the Song of celebrating the dead younger sister has been regarded to be Yuwang Kabop Sangjong, and its structure is consisted of front big paragraph and f rear small paragraph, both of wich are the characteristic of Korean poetry. The realistic lamentation due to being parted from his sister by death in the preceding big paragraph, as well as the philosophy of death for the Pure Land and the conquest on Amitabha belief and faith in the following small paragraph are all made into a main subject matter. This classical work is, therefore, well balanced with delineation of feelings and religion to be a wonderful ode and lyricism. | |
