영문초록 : The Korean YMCA was established by the name of the Hwangsung YMCA on October 28, 1903. Located in the capital Hansung of th Korean Empire, the association accepted many leaders of the Independence Association fresh from prison in 1904. The YMCA utilized sports activities as the main device to teach people the ideas of Christ, liberty, equality and charily. During the early period of the Japanese imperial rule, the YMCA was severely suppressed and had to be renamed as the Chosun Central YMCA subordnated to the Japanese YMCA. Nevertheless, the Korean YMCA was the only social organization to sponsor sports activites and support the movement for national liberation. The first gymnasium was built in 1916 and B. P. Barnhart an American took charge of sports program and education. It was around this time that many modern trainers were educated and new sports events like soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball and judo were introduced. In the middle of the Japanese colonial rule, the YMCA movement spread into rural areas to help the young man train physical strenght and struggle spirit as well. The YMCA basketball team's Japan expedition and baseball team's USA expedition as well as the ssiurm and archery contests in the 1930s helped boost national spirit. When the YMCA's secretary Sin Hung-u assumed the presidency of the Chosun Sports Association, its sports activities reached the peak. In the late Japanese rule, the YMCA activities withered again by the name of the Chosun Federation of the Japanese YMCA. But the agricultural activities with sports programs were continuously held in all parts of the country. At this time the YMCA introduced Danish calisthenics and spread it with Danish agricultural activities. In conclusion, the YMCA in Korea was established by the nationalistic demand and has contributed to boosting national identity and fixing modern sports through its continuous social sports activities during the Japanese imperial rule.
