영문초록 : Conrad was a novelist who tried to reveal thoroughly 'Dark Power' (irrational element) bidden in human inner mind. In "Heart of Darkness" the motive of Kurtz's coming to Africa was to exterminate savage custom and to civilze the Dark Continent with his solemn spirit of benevolence. On entering the Continent Kurtz's noble thought was flatly crumbled and he went mad over collecting ivory and changed into a cruel, and immoral human bled, embodying, 'Dark Power.' Wilderness in Africa attracted Kurtz mercilessly and he sank to the slave of 'Darkness'. Jim, hero of Lord Iim, desined to be a sailor through 'light holiday literature' and wished to be a brave sailor who would save the passengers in the face of danger, But in fact he jumped from the Patna. Mallow said that it was because of Jim's extreme imagination that Jim had jumped from the Patna forsaking his, Pilgrim's passengers, but in truth it was duteto Jim's selfish 'dark element' hidden in his inner mind. His act of jumping was stemmed from Jim's unconscious desire for life which was stronger than his sense of responsibility, and the self which jumped driven by horror was separated from the other self which deplored it, In Patusan, he came to be a self-sacrificing man. In "Heart of Darkness," Mallow experienced Carkness' hidden in human being through Kurtz and at the same time recognized 'dark power' hidden in his inner mind and so Marlow identified himself with Kurtg because of the common guiltiness between them. Marlow felt human mind of the common guiltiness between them. Marlow felt human mind 'inscrutable' and 'vague' (mysterious). Since Kurtz had an irrational element 'dark power' which could not be understood with only rationality he seemed not to grasp kurz exactly. Kurtz who whispers 'The horror! The horror!' is the embodiment of 'dark power' and at the same time the other self of Mallow, "Heart of Darkness," the title of this story symbolizes the deep inner mind of a human being and Kurtz is also the symbol of 'dark power' latent in a human heart. Comclusively "Heart of Darkness" is a book of recognition about 'dark power' and Lord Jim is a book of refusal of 'dark power.' For the price of the recognition about it Marlow suffered from extreme, mental anguish and as the result of the refusal Jim brought about destruction. In Lord Jim, Marlow identified himself with Jim, Captain Brierly identified himself with Jim. This self-identification is owing to 'dark power" hidden lying in the mind. In "Heart of darkness," Marlow's self-identification with Kurtz is the same reason as mentioned abeve due to 'Dark Power' inherent in the human mind. In Lord Jim there are some dreams which are regarded to have a meaning of duality-that is, a man is ready to dream a dual, romantic and nightmarish dream. A romantic dream comes from an ideal self and nightmarish one comes from dark power. Conrad recognized the irrational side of a human being and the world and brought a new vision into English fiction. In this connecation he can be looked upon as a modern writer.
