520 b영문초록 : Generally plates are defined as a kind of kitchen or table porcelain ware which is low and flat. There are various eating utensils of baked clay. Plates are used very frequently in our everyday life. As the time being, their patterns and figures have been changed with a variety of their functions and usages. After late Li-dynasty the progress of porcelain frame-making and the improved method of handling raw materials of the ware have made possible the mechanization of ceramic industry. Because of the mass production of porcelain ware, it has been inevitable to bring about the uniform patterns with same raw materials. Nowadays the preference of buffet style in the dietary life for Koreans has made the increased use of plates as their table ware. However being tired of uniform plates on their tables a tendency to search for more traditional and unique patterns with figures for them has been prominent. In order to make the plates for buffet with more traditional and native taste in their patterns and figures, we studied related references, articles, and photographs for them in the first part of this thesis. It is the conclusion that the aesthetic expression of "Boon-Cheong" earthen ware is a representative of Korean porcelains throughout our history. "Boon-Cheong" ware is practical, simple, and beautiful which is peculiar to relate with the characteristics and values of Li-dynasty, though it does not have so called the refined beautifulness. It also matches the modern life style for Koreans. We had a survey of raw materials, sites, and markets for ceramic industry from the late Li-dynasty through the period of Japanese occupation to the present Korea. As for their shapes, we designed our new plates for buffet applied with them of Korean earthen ware and rectangular bowls without any support on their bottoms. Followings are the production processes of plates for buffet in this study: choosing raw materials; preparing clay; forming with hand; surfacing decoration; drying up; first baking; glazing; and second baking. Forming with a spinning wheel makes possible the simplicity of plates of "Boon-Cheong" earthern ware. "Boon-Jang" technique was applied to surface decoration of plates for buffet in this study. Figures like, so called, "Cheol-Hoi-Moon", "Kwi-Yal-Moon", and "Dum-Vung-Moon" etc..., might give simple, naive, and peaceful feeling. The final product, plates for buffet of this study, would contribute not only to recollect our native beauty but also to recognize them as our own traditional plates in our everyday life.
