곽재우장군설화의 전승양상 연구

영문초록 : The research aims to review the form in which the traditional tales of General Kwak Je-woo have been handed down and to grasp the people's consciousness from within. By doing so, it also tries to take a note of the significance of his tales in our literary history. 1. The transmissive forms of General Kwak's tales with a double-faced characteristic. The tales of General Kwak consist of fragmentary episodes. But when we take a look at him, he has the looks of either as a transcendental hero, or as a mortal hero. General Kwak as the figure of a transcendental hero is being represented to be a transcendental being in the whole phases of his birth, discipline, performance, and death. That is, people endowed him with the legitimacy with which they could overcome Imjin-weran, the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 by depicting him as such a transcendental figure. General Kwak in the appearance of a mortal hero has emerged as a wise general as well as an unsuccessful general. In the phase of Japanese invasion, he is highlighted as a wise general who defeated the Japanese by using guerrilla warfare and camouflage, and after the war, he is portrayed as a hermit person refusing to entering into governmental office to protect himself. Futhermore, he once was portrayed as an unsuccessful general, which might be because his story, while having been tainted by the haters of his doggedness not to enter governmental service, was handed down to people as altered-to-popularist tales. Thus, General Kwak has been portrayed in the tales as a double-faced general, one a transcendental hero, the other a mortal hero. 2. The succession and the expansion of traditional people's consciousness. Those who have been in charge of the oral hand-down are mostly commoners. Therefore, once we take a look at the tales, we may grasp the people's world of consciousness. So do we in the tales of General Kwak. We were able to observe the people's consciousness in the handed down tales of him. Most of all, a traditional people's consciousness has been observed in his tales, which emphasized confucian values such as loyalty and filial piety and were grounded on Taoist values with which he was portrayed as using Taoist magic and becoming a mountain wizard. Confucianism and Taoism are the traditional doctrines on which the tales of General Kwak have been based while being orally handed down. And with this, we become aware that those transmitters of tales took a serious view of loyalty and filial piety, and with their use of Taoist magic, we can figure the people's consciousness trying to win the victory in the invasion by Japanese. The people's volition such as this has developed into the criticism of reality in the tales. Criticizing the ruling class who was unable to forestall the Japanese invasion, the people have shown in the tales their enmity toward Ming as well as Japan, the forces that inflicted direct harm on the people. The feminine consciousness also stands out, which indicates that the national disaster of Imjin-weran was not just a matter for men, but one that women also had to tackle. With the aspect women taking the lead in the preparation for Imjin-weran and getting over, the growth of feminine consciousness has become conspicuous. 3. The tales' significance in Korean literary history Feminine activities have been highlighted in the tales of General Kwak Je-woo. These can be said to be the growth of feminine consciousness, which has been handed down from the ancient mythology but went dormant by the social changes in the times of men's predominance, coming out with Imjin-weran as a momentum. Thus, the feminine consciousness in the tales of General Kwak has affected the feminine novels in the later times. That is, the significance of General Kwak's tales in literary history is that they are the literary works which have been developed from and have succeeded to the feminine consciousness of the predecessors. / 한글초록 : 본 연구는 구비 전승되는 곽재우장군설화를 대상으로 하여 곽재우장군설화의 전승양상을 살펴보고, 그 속에 나타난 민중의식을 파악하는데 그 목적이 있다. 또한 이를 통하여 곽재우장군설화의 문학사적 의의를 살펴보았다. 1. 양가적 특징을 지닌 곽재우장군설화의 전승양상 곽재우장군설화는 단편적인 삽화로 구성되어 있다. 그러나 이를 살펴보면 초월적 영웅과 인간적 영웅의 모습으로 대별되어 나타남을 알 수 있다. 초월적 영웅의 모습을 지닌 곽재우장군은 출생-수련-행적-죽음에 이르는 전 과정에서 초월성을 지닌 인물로서 설정되어 있다. 민중들은 이처럼 곽재우장군을 이야기 속에서 초월성을 지닌 인물로 설정하여 임진왜란을 극복할 수 있었던 정당성을 부여하였던 것이다. 인간적 영웅의 모습으로서 그는 지혜로운 장군의 모습과 실패한 장군의 모습으로 나타나고 있었다. 임란과정에서는 유격전술과 위장술을 이용하여 왜적을 물리치는 지혜로운 모습을 강조하고 있으며, 임진왜란이 끝난 후에는 자신의 몸을 보호하기 위하여 벼슬길에 나아가지 않는 모습을 강조하고 있다. 그러나 설화 속에서 곽재우장군은 실패한 장군으로 형상화되기도 하였다. 이는 곽재우장군이 벼슬에 나아가지 않고 자신의 길을 고집하는 것을 싫어하는 집단에 의하여 비하된 그의 이야기가 민중들에게 전해지면서 흥미위주의 이야기로 전승되었기 때문으로 생각된다. 이처럼 곽재우장군은 이야기 속에서 초월적 영웅의 모습과 인간적 영웅의 모습의 양가적 특징을 지닌 인물로 형상화되어 있었다. 2. 전통적 민중의식의 계승과 민중의식의 확장 구비전승설화의 전승담당자들은 대부분이 민중들이다. 따라서 설화를 살펴보면 민중들의 의식세계를 파악할 수 있다. 곽재우장군 설화도 마찬가지여서 전승되고 있는 설화를 파악하여 그 속에 나타난 민중들의 의식을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 우선 곽재우장군설화에서는 전통적인 민중의식이 나타나고 있었다. 즉 충과 효를 중시하는 유교의식을 강조하고 있었으며, 곽재우장군이 도술을 사용하고 신선술을 닦는 등 도교의식을 바탕으로 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 유교의식과 도교의식은 전통적인 민중의식으로서 곽재우장군설화가 구비 전승되면서 이러한 전통적인 의식을 바탕으로 하였음을 알 수 있다. 또한 이를 통하여 설화전승자들이 효와 충을 중시하고 있음을 파악할 수 있으며, 도술을 사용하는 모습을 통하여 임진왜란에서 승리하고자 했던 민중들의 의식을 짐작할 수 있다. 민중들의 이러한 의지는 설화 속에서 현실에 대한 비판의식으로 발전하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 민중들은 임진왜란을 막지 못했던 지배계층을 비판하고, 민중들에게 직접적인 피해를 입힌 명과 왜에 대한 부정적인 인식을 설화속에 나타내고 있는 것이다. 또한 여성의식이 두드러지게 나타나고 있다. 이는 임진왜란이라는 국란이 남성만의 문제가 아니였으며, 여성과 더불어 해결해야할 문제라는 것을 말하고 있는 것으로, 여성의 주도하에 임란을 대비하고 극복하는 모습을 통하여 여성의식이 성장하였음을 보여주고 있다. 3. 곽재우장군설화의 문학사적 의의 곽재우장군설화는 여성의 활동이 강조되고 있다. 이는 여성의식의 성장이라고 할 수 있는데 여성의식은 고대의 신화에서부터 이어져온 것이였으나 남성위주의 사회변화에 의하여 드러나지 않고 있다가 임진왜란을 계기로 하여 다시 성장하였다고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 곽재우장군설화에 나타난 여성의식은 후대 여성위주의 소설에 영향을 주고 있다. 즉 곽재우장군설화의 문학사적 의의는 여성의식의 계승과 발전을 잇는 문학 작품이라는 것이다.
