영문초록 : Purpose of this research is that investigate writer's consciousness which life and type of human of at that time through Jeong bi-seok novel 『Free Woman』characters in the stories' analysis are embodied, and are indwelled there into with special quality of work examining what function this persons do within work how. In this research, analyzed with Bremond's theory of type to Jeong bi-seok novel 『Free Woman』that is published in 1985 in Goryeowon. And know well that it is case that a person's a agent or character plays plural other role in contrast to if there is case that some person's agent or character plays one role in work actually before classification. Work inside of almost persons belong all by effect shape of a character's person. Effect shape of a character's person gets divided in pleasure shape of a character, fetish shape of a character, morality shape of a character to three righteous category. Pleasure shape of a character gets divided by coercer style and inhibiter style again by value of results category. Person of coercer style is Shin chun-ho, Han tae-seok, Choi yun-ju, O seon-yeong. Shin chun-ho and Han tae-seok directly O seon-yeong is blinding persons by results and Choi yun-ju is person who instigate debauchery to her indirectly. This type is emotional exchange as human relations but existences that seek sensual pleasure that feeling of satisfaction falls. Inhibiter style person can lift Jang tae-yeon. As Jang tae-yeon spoils spiritual immorality about Bak eun-mi, once does not expose it and controls. Fetish shape of a character gets divided by tempter style and intimidator style again by value of practical category. Tempter style can lift Choi yun-ju, Chinese emigrants member, Baek gwan-gjin, O seon-yeong, Won hyo-sam, O byeong-heon, intimidator style is Baek gwang-jin, O seon-yeong. Solicitor style can lift Jang tae-yeon and Choi yun-ju, and detaining elder sister's husband can lift Jang tae-yeon with children. Frustration elder sister's husband can lift Choi yun-ju by person who miscarry in situation that change rapidly unlike image before him who is been consistent by situation on a chessboard that degrade. Chastener style can lift Jang tae-yeon, by he chastises O seon-yeong that degrade acting role such as a judge more the event by dilapidation go down .And improve the event by pardoning and relieve repentance shape of a character O seon-yeong that repent by chastisement. O seon-yeong raises event whole through repentance. Persons of 『Free Woman』that observe before bare writer's plan through various kinds role within work. This types have function following on composition function, prosecution function, enlightenment enemy. In work many persons are contributing in work composition along with the events within work, and each persons show prosecuting massage of wrong liberalism and democracy after ago through effect relation of the action severally. / 한글초록 : 이 연구의 목적은 정비석 소설 《자유부인》의 인물들을 분석하고, 인물들이 작품 속에서 어떤 기능을 하는지 살펴봄으로써 작품의 특성과 그 속에 내재된 작가의 의식을 고찰하는데 있다. 그리고 나아가 대중소설 인물의 전형을 파악하는데 그 의의를 두고자 한다. 본고는 고려원에서 1985년 간행된 정비석 소설 『자유부인 』上, 下 두 권을 대상으로 브레몽의 유형론을 원용하여 분석하였다. 먼저, 인물의 유형에서는 행위자형을 중심으로 크게 영향자형과 변경자형으로 나누었는데 작중의 대부분의 인물들이 영향자형의 여러 모습으로 복잡하게 분류되어지는 반면, 사건을 변화시키는 변경자형으로는 주요인물을 중심으로 개선자형과 타락자형의 쌍으로만 분류되어짐을 볼 수 있다. 이 두 가지 인물유형은 인물의 행위를 중심으로 분류한 것으로 다시 각각 하위유형으로 분류된다. 영향자형의 인물로는 작중의 거의 모든 인물들이 다 속한다. 영향자형의 인물은 세 가지 정의의 범주로 쾌락자형, 물신자형, 도덕자형으로 나뉜다. 쾌락자형은 성적 범주의 가치로 다시 강요자형과 억제자형으로 나뉜다. 강요자형의 인물로는 신춘호, 한태석, 최윤주, 오선영을 들었다. 신춘호와 한태석은 직접적으로 오선영을 성적으로 현혹시키는 인물들이고, 최윤주는 간접적으로 그녀에게 외도를 부추기는 인물이다. 이 형은 인간관계로서의 정서적인 교환이나 만족감이 빠진 감각적인 쾌락을 추구하게 되는 존재들이다. 억제자형 인물로는 장태연을 들 수 있다. 이 형은 기존의 전통적 윤리관의 영향으로 억압된 성 가치를 가지고 의식적으로든 무의식적이든 성에 대해 침묵하고 억제한 채 생활해 나가는 존재이다. 물신자형은 실용적 범주의 가치로 다시 유혹자형과 협박자형으로 나뉜다. 유혹자형은 최윤주, 화교회원, 백광진, 오선영, 원효삼, 오병헌을 들 수 있으며, 협박자형은 백광진, 오선영이 해당된다. 이들은 작중에서 위로는 정치가, 밑으로는 기업인을 사칭한 협잡꾼까지 모두가 물신주의로 팽배한 시대를 반영하고 있다. 도덕자형은 윤리적 가치의 범주로 권유자형과 만류자형으로 나뉜다. 권유자형은 장태연과 최윤주를 들 수 있고, 만류자형은 아이들과 장태연, 이월선을 들 수 있다. 이들은 타락한 가치를 경계하고 인륜적으로 지켜야 할 가치에 대해 일깨우는 인물들이다. 변경자형은 행위를 통해 사건 또는 상황을 변화시키거는 인물로, 크게 타락자형과 개선자형으로 나뉜다. 타락자형은 사건과 상황을 나쁜 쪽으로 퇴보시켜 버리거나 귀착하는 행위를 하는 존재들로 타락한 국면으로 일관된 이 전의 상황에 급격한 타격을 받아 좌절하여 변화해 사건을 급반전시키는데 큰 역할을 한다. 이 유형의 인물로는 오선영과 최윤주를 들 수 있다. 개선자형은 사건이나 상황을 좋은 방향으로 나아가게 하는 인물이다. 개선자형으로 장태연을 들 수 있는데, 그는 심판자와 같은 역할을 함으로써 타락한 오선영을 응징하여 더이상 사건을 퇴락적으로 하행시키지 않는다. 그러나, 개선자형의 인물인 장태연은 작중의 작가의도에 따라 자의가 아닌 가치관의 영향으로 개선자로서의 면모를 보이는, 스스로의 희생을 감수한 개선자임을 알 수 있었다. 앞서 살핀《자유부인》의 인물들은 작품 속에서 구성적 기능, 고발적 기능, 계몽적 기능을 통해 작가의 의도를 뚜렷히 나타내어 준다. 먼저, 작중의 많은 인물들은 작품 속에서 주요인물인 장태연과 오선영을 중심으로 적대자와 보조자의 역할을 통해 극의 구성에 적극적으로 참여하고 있다. 또한 각 인물들은 전후의 잘못된 자유주의와 민주주의의 왜곡성을 낱낱이 보여줌으로써 당시 사회를 고발하고 있으며, 전통적 가치관의 정립으로 문제점에 대한 계몽을 시사하고 있다.
