영문초록 : This thesis is written with to understanding the idea and thoughts of Brahms by analyzing and studying structurally his later work. "Vier ernste Gesa¨nge" op.121. The motive that he composed 'Vier ernsts Gesa¨nge' op121 is because the great man of sincerity who became lonelt after he had lost his loving friends Elisabeth. Hans Bu¨low, Clara Schumann had a premonitionof the end of his life. And thus he earnestly consider the deaths of his friends and blessed their deaths. He composed the interpretation of love. All of these motivated him to compose this peace. The analysis and research of "Vier ernste Gesa¨nge" op121 one of Brahms Lieds can be summed up as follows. The fundamental elements which Brahms Lieds have are melody, harmony, the construction and form of tonality. It is an unusal thing that accompaniment is pictorial. However, on the parts of playing the piano the moods are marvelously diversified. The broad use of bass by the left hand. especially, becomes Brahms' own characteristic. The unceasing strength which his movement about death brings forth is expressed in the peculiar combination with rhythm, harmony of voice-parts and piano, ingenious modulation, dark minor scale, and cheerful major scale ect. In "Vier ernste Gesa¨nge" op121 the inspiration of death and its fear are expressed from the first piece to the third one. In the fourth he composed the melodies in which the suggestive belief that he who had believed in and counted on God would get the eternal salvation seems to be contained. According to the result of the study on his work "Vier ernste Gesa¨nge", Brahms' words of songs eloquently express his philosophic view of life resulted from admiration and blessing of the mortality of human beings in this futile life and from emphasis on the greatness of love. / 한글초록 : 본 논문은 브람스의 마지막 가곡인 '네 개의 엄숙한 노래 (Vier ernste Gesa¨nge op.121)'를 연구 분석함으로써 그의 사상과 음악세계를 이해하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 이 '네 개의 엄숙한 노래'의 작곡동기는 엘리자베드, 뷜로, 클라라와 같은 사랑하는 친구들의 죽음으로 외롭게된 브람스가 자신의 죽음에 대한 예감으로 죽음에 대한 불안감을 해소하고 사랑을 강조하고자 하는 데서 찾을 수 있다. 이 곡의 분석에 있어서는 가사를 우선 해석한 후 형식, 멜로디, 리듬, 화성 등에 관해 고찰하였으며, 특히 가사와 음악과의 관계 가사와 반주와의 관계등을 중점적으로 연구하였다. 이 곡의 분석과 연구를 통해 브람스 가곡의 특징들을 발견할 수 있는데, 무엇보다도 선율의 아름다움과 세련미가 두드러진다. 또한 브람스가 즐겨 사용한 변형된 유절형식이 아닌 통절형식을 취한 이 곡 모두는 각 절마다 어떤 일정한 동기를 기초로 하여 발전해 가는 선율진행으로 분산화음. 당김음, 지속음등 이 가사의 내용과 부합되도록 짜여져 있다. 그리고 리듬과 화성에 있어서의 노래성부와 피아노의 독특한 조화, 교묘한 억양, 어두운 단조와 풍부한 장조의 대비등을 통하여 죽음에 대한 그의 느낌을 표현하고자 하였다. 이 '네 개의 엄숙한 노래'는 모두 성경에서 가사를 선택하였는데 그 중 앞의 세 곡은 죽음에 대한 영감과 두려움을 표현하였고, 마지막 곡은 하나님의 사랑으로만 영원한 구원을 얻을 수 있다는 그의 믿음을 담고 있다. 결론적으로 이 '네 개의 엄숙한 노래'는 고전주의적인 기법과 낭만적 요소를 잘 융합시킨 작품으로써 낭만주의 시대의 고전적 낭만주의자로서의 브람스의 위치와 특색을 잘 나타내고 있음을 알 수 있다.
