사회학적 관점에서 본 록음악

영문초록 : Popular music, which has strong power and exercises its influence in the flood of popular culture, creates common understanding and reflects life of human beings. Therefore, popular music is one of modes of cultural exchange. The essence and value of music has social functions and relations within category of music sociology. After all, because its value appears in the course of receiving it, this study will have to be considerably accomplished to look into the relations between music and society. The rock music arising from the states began to spread all over the world, reflecting the social features to which it has its background. The objective of this study is to find out how the rock music came into existence, what characteristics it entails, what messages it suggests and how it reflects the social circumstances and cultural values. The rock music is reflecting and illuminating the society that gave birth to it rather than challenging it. The rock music gives the public contentment, abundantly echoing the social aspects. The rock music came into being from the combination of the black and white music in the 1950s: rhythm and blues and country music. The rock music is a slang which means sex in the very sense of the word, implying obscenity. The rock music as a product from the blues that the black slaves in africa would cite was a monopoly to the governed and alienated class. The rock music was born by necessity of the youngsters who were skeptical of and opposed to the current order and authority, demanding a breakthrough in the search of some powerful music. This kind of opposing nature is characteristic of the rock music. Futuremore, the rock music is one aspect of the public cultures as well as the produt of commercialism. On the one hand, the rock music takes on critism and dissapproval of the current system. The former, on the other, is in complementary relations with the latter. In terms of the negative messages the rock music as one of the culture communication delivers to us such as the words, album jacket design, luminace, costume and performance tend to be aggressive and extreme given the fact that it contains sexual problems, violence, drugs, satanism, etc. Besides, it conveys the disapproving messages through its rhythm and sounds. I believe that this study provided a good opportunity for the adolesents who have no proper values or beliefs about the music in question on their own due to the discolored public culture as well as for the general public who are the very agents that adopt the rock music to discern what is wholesome from what's not by supplying some of the questionable music, rock groups, the singers' behaviors and lives, their videos, and so forth. I wish that studies on critical popular culture will be achieved in abundance for the youth. / 한글초록 : 대중문화의 범람 속에서 엄청난 위력을 가지고 영향력을 행사하는 대중음악은 사회적으로 공유된 이해를 창조하고 인간생활을 반영한다. 이로 인해 대중음악은 결국 문화와 문화가 서로 교류하는 양식 중의 하나로 정의된다. 보통 음악미학에 의존하였던 음악의 본질이나 가치를 설명하였던 작업이 이제는 음악의 사회적 기능이나 연관성을 따지는 음악사회학 범주 안에 연계되어 진다. 이로 인해 음악의 가치가 음악을 받아들이는 수용과정에서 비롯되며, 그 직접적인 영향을 미치는 사회적 요인은 사회적인 분석에 중요한 부분이 되며 음악과 사회의 관계를 충실히 하기 위해 연구되어져야 할 부분이다. 미국에서 발생한 대중음악인 록음악은 그 사회를 반영하며 생성되어 전세계로 전파되어 나갔다. 본 연구는 이 록음악이 어떻게 생겨났으며, 어떤 음악인지, 무엇을 나타내려고 하며, 전하려 하는지, 또 그 사회적 상황과 문화적 가치를 어떻게 반영하여 생산하고 소비되는지에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 록음악은 체제에 도전하는 것이 아니라 체제를 반영하고 조명하는 것이다. 록음악은 사회를 잘 표현하면서 다시 대중들에게 대리만족과 같은 다른 영향력을 끼치고 있다. 록음악은 1950년대 흑인음악인 리듬 앤 블루스와 백인음악인 컨트리음악의 결합으로 태어났다. 록음악은 그 용어 자체가 섹스를 뜻하는 속어로 록음악의 음란한 면을 비춰 주고 있으며, 아프리카에서 노예로 온 흑인들이 부르던 블루스로 인해 생겨난 것으로 피지배 계급, 소외 계급의 전유물이었다. 또한 록음악은 기존질서와 권위에 비판적이고 욕구불만을 가진 젊은이들이 종래의 음악과 낭만적인 노래만으로 만족하지 못하고, 강력한 힘과 불만의 돌파구가 되는 음악을 요구하여 생겨난 음악이다. 이런 불평등과 같은 사회 저항 기운은 록 음악의 특징이다. 그리고 록음악은 대중문화임과 동시에 상업주의의 상품이다. 록음악은 기존체제를 비판하고 반항적이며 저항적인 반면에 그들이 비판하는 기성의 것들과 맞물려 발전하고 있다. 문화교류 양식으로서 록음악이 가사와 앨범자켓의 디자인, 조명, 의상, 공연행동을 통해 우리에게 나타내는 부정적인 메시지는 성적인 문제, 폭력성, 마약, 사탄이즘 등의 파괴적이며 극단적이다. 또한 록음악의 리듬과 사운드를 통해서도 그들이 전하고자 하는 부정적인 메시지를 전할 수 있다. 본 연구는 황폐해진 대중문화로 인해 뚜렷한 가치관을 상실하고 있는 청소년들을 위해, 그리고 록음악 수용자인 대중들을 위해 록음악에서 문제성이 있는 가사, 록그룹의 명칭, 록가수들의 언행과 삶, 록그룹의 뮤직비디오와 그 외 공신력있는 자료들을 제시함으로 그들이 건전한 음악을 비교할 수 있는 기회를 제공했다고 본다. 이에 청소년들을 위해 대안을 제시하는 비판적 대중음악 연구들이 많이 나오길 바라며 본 연구가 조금이나마 도움을 주었으면 한다.
