In 2010, the United Nations (UN) embarked on formally recognizing the human right to water, although safe water had been in its scope as early as 1977. Departments, committees, councils, and other bodies within the UN have outlined standards, definitions, and goals to serve as a universal framework for working toward safe, affordable, accessible water. The UN has provided guidance to countries and governments worldwide, helping developing as well as developed nations.
